2019 Highlights

We had such a great time dancing with you in 2019! Here are some of our favourite highlights!

Events!

There were a heap of great events throughout the year - with competitions, visiting teachers, performances and live music!

Harvest moon ball

The Harvest Moon Ball was a dance contest held in Madison Square Gardens in New York City, at the height of the swing era, on a scale that we can hardly even imagine today. Thousands upon thousands of spectators came to watch dancers compete in all kinds of styles, including Lindy Hop. To celebrate the end of Summer, we had our own version - there were contests, social dancing and some damn good times!

world lindy hop day

Every year, we come together to celebrate this amazing dance, as well as the history, the historical figures and the community that have built it. As one of the most influential people in swing dance history, Frankie Manning’s birthday (May 26th, 1914) is a fitting marker for World Lindy Hop Day! We started a little early on the 25th with social dancing, and of course, a few renditions of the shim sham.

liston swings

We were proud to support the Liston-Rutherford college jazz band in in this special fundraising event! The band played three awesome sets to get you all dancing the night away. We raised $1000 on the night to help the band get down to Wellington to compete in the Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival!

Auckland swing dance competitions

This was an opportunity to show off your flashiest moves and dancing skills. We had a range of categories to enter so you could learn, improve and challenge yourselves, and win some great prizes!

midwinter mess around

A whole weekend of workshops with the fabulous Laia Puig Azagra, Gustav Jacobsson, Jen Hale and Nick Kokay, not to mention three nights of social dancing including live music from the Symonds Street Six!

Performance ball

Students and teachers from all around Auckland presented an array of amazing routines and performances! We packed out the Concert Chamber of the Auckland Town Hall for a beautiful night!

sail city jump

One of the absolute highlights of the year was this weekend of superstar teachers, live music and fun social dances. We had a great time with the inspiring Hellsten sisters from Sweden (Mikaela and Maja), the wonderful Lauren and Andrew from Wellington, as well as the incredibly lovely Shobhana Nambiar and Andy Fodor from Melbourne!

Christmas party

We finished the year off with a relaxed afternoon of lawn bowls, social dancing and games. We said a big thank you to the teachers and volunteers, and everyone who played a part in making this year so special!

Classes!

What a great year of classes! We said hello to some new faces, waved goodbye to some old favourites, and danced all the styles we could possibly get our feet into! Some of the highlights included our first regular set of Level 2 Balboa classes, our first Level 3 Lindy Hop class, new solo jazz and shag classes, as well as a new venue in Kingsland. We’d especially like to recognise the efforts of all the teachers this year, a huge thank you to;

These people put in a huge amount of effort to share their love of dancing and performing, and their passion is what keeps everything going!
